Literature In 1880, in his two-volume "Across the Zodiac," English novelist Percy Greg described an astronaut's successful journey from Earth to Mars aboard a spacecraft driven by the force of electromagnetic repulsion-called "apergia." Camille Flammarion's novels were less scientific and more sentimental. His novel "Stella," published in 1897, is a love story in which the hero dies on a mountain peak and is reincarnated on Mars.
